Our school educates deaf and hearing impaired students who need special care , we aim and work for when they graduate to build an integration with society , to improve their knowledge which will be necessay at find appropriate job according their vocation, to improve their vocational skills and communication skills. At the same time, we prepare students to university life. Our purpose is to make happy and productive students despite the obstacles they face with because of their disability.
Vocational School for the Deaf Students
Our school educates deaf and hearing impaired students who need special care. It aims and works to build an integration with society when they graduate , to improve their knowledge which will be necessary to find appropriate jobs according to their vocation, improving their vocational skills and communication skills. At the same time, we prepare students to university life. Our purpose is to make happy and productive students despite the obstacles they face with because of their disability.
The building of our school had been given at 1992 to build as a school of physical disabled students. The school had been built at 2000. Unfortunately because of the lack of physical disabled students it has been changed to be Deaf Vocational School in 2001 at Nilüfer , Bursa province Turkey. The first part of the building had been given to Duyum İşitme Engelliler İlköğretim Okulu, the second part of the building had been given to Mitat Enç İlköğretim ve İş Okulu, and the second floor, third part of the school had been given to deaf students for vocational education. Later the 4th part of the building had been given to RAM.
It is commonly observed that the deaf and mute person are being better concentrated at attention intensive job tasks for that reason they are also very talented as vocational workers in the production line. Moreover being mute and hearing impaired also causes the high concentration at all details and to be aware of their gestures, body strengths, mimics. This is proven by the high success of our students at sports and theatre like pantomime. All they are like natural soft skills they had developed, which will be seen as the positive effect resulted of their disabilities.
It has been observed that the deaf people are well as a vocational workers by being purely concentrated to their attention required duty tasks because of their disability.The lack of hearing and speaking abilities causes the strenghtening of their visual and physical abilities.To give some example; their talent on sports which can be checked from our history of prizes won, their hand craft talents on specific vocational tasks. Moreover we can observe their talents on drama, because of using sign language their natural talent using gestures and mimics are overdeveloped.
The equal opportunities on education is a must for democratic societies.In another words this can not be acchieved excluding disabled students whoreqires special education. Turkish Education system is based on non- disabled students and this is a real barrier for students with special needs. Because the education system do not take into consideration of lack of abilities of many disabled students, most of the programmes being inaccesible for them. This results in lack of education materials designed for their special needs according to their disability.
On the other hand there is a lack of information which causes unawareness of disabilities within society. The employers are also unaware of the disability and mainly avoid employing a disabled person even they must with the obligation of laws up to a ratio. Having no information about the disabilities makes fearful about lack productivity and security in their work space. However this is being changed when our school is being seen on media as with the students success and projects done to improve their life quality.
The Establishment of our School
Athough our school built for ortopedic disabled students,there could not been found enough students to start education . Later, this school was allocated for three different school which are "Duyum İlköğretim Okulu", "Mitat Enç Elemantery school" and "Nilüfer İşitme Engelliler Meslek Lisesi" in the same building. Now those schools are also in the same building.
THE IMPORTANCE OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION
It is important to have qualified people who will have the highest production to become industrilized for the development of our country. Noone can exlcluded from education . The special need students are very important potential as intermediate staff of market. Vocational education has two goals; one is to help young people to find a job that they will be successful and the other is to train the young people as qualified workers for the economical development of our country by creating the successively educated intermediate staff on different sectors. It is a reality that we can only reach the level of developed countries by the educated professional youth.
RIGHTS OF THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE GRADUATED FROM VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS.
1. Students who are graduated from Technical High Schools can find a job at government or private sector.
2. Students graduated from Technical High Schools , after working for a year at industry , can have an exam and if they would be successful they can start their own work, they get the certification for that.
3. They have opportunity the university exam and have a university education .
4. They can attend Junior Technical Colleges about their own subjects that are for two years without having a university exam .
The Departments included at our Special Education Vocational Training High School :
Our school has 4 main vocational training department and in total with vocational and cultural 37 teachers at education team for 212 students.
Electricity - Electronic Technologies Department:
Nowadays, Technology is changing very rapidly. Many new machines are joining to our daily life and they help us to live more comfortable than before. The electricities’ importence is growing everyday. So this department is very important for our future.
In that department, our students learn, base of electricty, electronics and computers.They learn wraping up for coil of elecricity-motors and they can control all kind of electric machineries. They can draw electricitiy plans for buildings and small factories. After graduation from our school, they can find some jobs in industry as an electricity technician or they can open their own electrictiy shops.
Electric Department has an aim to give students knowledge and skills that are related to producing, operating and dispensing of electricity and the assembling checking, f ixing and using of electrical machinery systems. At this department students practice on the Installation of electricity, winding, electrical and electronical remote control circuits. Graduated students of this department can either have an oportunity to study on their branches at universities or have Professional certificate of electric skills.
Clothing Manufacturing Technoloies Deparment:
Textile and Confectionary trade sectors are risen recently and Bursa is one of the main producer companies of this sector’s. Because there is a demand for well educated intermediate staff fort his sector the department is very important. This department gives lectures on clothing, home textiles, women-men- children clothing, and woven technics, etc.. which is very necessary for textile sectors intermediate staffs’s knowledge. The lectures are both theoretical and application based for the textile sector.
The graduated students can work at textile sector or they can open their own design and manufacturing workshops.If they prefer to go on their education at university they can also be a teacher on the main subject of Cloth Manufacturing And Textile Technologies.
The students need skills, such as talent of hands for detailed works , talent for colour choosing, tendency for fashion, and a sensible eye of aesthetic. They can go further more according to their talent. The life long learning and digital searches is a must for this department cause the Technologies are improving very fast an one must have a tendency of research on the subject for those renewals.
Furniture and Interior Design Technologies :
The Furniture and Decoration department is one of the main vocational training departments of our school, including designing of houses, offices, stores and other social localities, producing furniture, upholstery and modern decoration techniques. ,
As modern technology develops, new produced machines increase the demand for this profession. In this department, vocational techniques are given theoretically and pactically such as furniture design, upholstery, wood turnery, modern decoration techniques, color knowledge and aesthetic. Also recently we had been donated by ….. ( bagıslanan programın adı yazılcak) and an introduction information training had been given by the owner of programme. This helped students to improve their design talents and it had fullfiled the need visual education materials.
In this department, the students are gained some skills on making and designing furniture, there are some sections In this department as ; furnitureworks, platingworks on furniture, lathing on furniture, the art of carving on furniture, upholstery works, ornamental inlaying works, polishing and painting works and carpentry for construction.This department is also taking some works for school’s revolving funds. The wooden products done as homeworks such as tables and chairs are being used at school interior design.
The department gives graduates who can be an intermediate staff between engineer and master for Furniture & Decoration section in industry.The students are using their hand skills, visual skills, and they are very patient at detailed works which is a must and a soft skill they naturally have.
Metall Technologies:
In our school´s Metal Technologies department, students get knowledge and skills about forming metals cold or hot, oxygas welding, electrical welding and modern welding methods. As well as graduated students can constitute their own business with a few budget, they can also find job in iron-steel industry, automotive industry, machinery manufacture industry and dockyards.
Although our department´s name is metal works as general, it covers as branches, hot ironmongery, cold ironmongery, welding for electricity arc, welding for oxygen ironing for mould, work for ornamented iron, works for sheet iron, works for steal roof, aluminium and plastic chopping to pieces. It is a profession that many metal and steel products can be processed, for shaping and welding.
SUCCESS OF OUR SCHOOL:
From the beginning of our school ,starting the date of education at the competitions made between Deaf and Hearing Impaired Special Education Vocational Training High Schools all over country our school has had many awards . The students has had many awards mostly at "Basketball", "Football", "Athletics", "Table Tennis".
LDV : The mobility visits had been fulfilled at 2011 to Germany within the EU - LDV project named as The “Importance of Vocational Education for Preparing of Deaf and Hearing Impaired Students to Working Life “ and it helped to improve the knowledge and point of view of our students very much.
LOCAL PROJECTS : The Project covered at 2012 which had been funded %90 by BEBKA. The Project was about CAD design for technical drawing so a full equiped labrotary had been established. Later on all the students at 12th grades from 3 departments (except the Clothing Manufacturing Technologies students which do not have that lessons in their curriculum) have been educated at the same time with their own teachers . The visual materials and equipments which are absolutely very important for deaf education system had been improved by the source of Project. Mainly our deaf students have improved their drawing skills for design which can be used in their own departments individually.
Both projects gave an opportunity to promote our school while they improved the quality of education. After those projects there had been meetings with employers, and other organizations to raise awareness which will help our students´ quality of education and opportunities for employment.
